Max and I have a tradition of keeping a running list of
restaurants, bars, and local places that we want to try for those times when all
we can come up with is the same-ole same-ole. Last weekend, I was excited to find that Max’s list is bursting
with new must-trys around Birmingham. There has been all kinds of talk over the past few years about the revitalization of Birmingham and I am so excited to see this come to life, to see Birmingham come to life! It wasn't long ago that downtown Birmingham was nothing but boarded
up store fronts and empty streets but now downtown has taken on new life with the Barons stadium, a bustling loft district, the theater district and now a new “uptown” area. Even some Atlanta hot spots are making
their way to Bham to join in on the rebuilding of the Magic City and excitement is growing.
On the top of our list of new places to try was The Southern kitchen & bar. The Southern is owned by the founders of The Ivy here in Buckhead and designed
by Atlanta architecture and design firm Square Feet Studio. Naturally, this
hits close to home. Modern industrial
details and a comfortable ambiance sang true to the Square Feet Studio aesthetic.
Beautiful reclaimed wood, stained concrete, and steel give a nod to Birmingham's
history in a sophisticated and urban way with just enough southern charm. Colorful custom artwork, striking
pendants hovering above the tables and operable garage
door style windows make this place great for a casual meal or a chic night out. With a rooftop patio and menu highlights like "Plantation pimento cheese dip" and a burger named "The Beauregard" it's sure to be a local gem.
