beyond the to-do list

Sorry it’s been so quiet around here. It’s been one of those weeks where I feel like I’m going a million miles an hour and somehow blogging ends up unchecked on my list. darnit.

Last week, I had the day from you-know-where proceeded by a weekend at home sick. First, I got what felt like the beginning of the flu, then I got rear ended by a truck, and theeen I got stopped for speeding on my way to the emergency room. The good news is it turned out to be a virus [not flu thank the lord], my accident was minor and nobody was hurt [besides some standard whip lash I’m still recovering from],  and the police officer was so kind and understanding and let me go with a warning [hence my new found love and respect for police officers everywhere]. So, after surviving the worst day ever followed by a no-fun recovery weekend, this week has been a never-ending game of catch up. One of those weeks where there are not enough hours in the day followed by not enough hours of sleep. Yeah, you know the ones.

With weeks like this, that I think we tend to have more often than not, sometimes it’s hard to see beyond the to-do list but when it’s quiet at night and I’m running through tomorrows schedule in my head I realize how silly that is, spending my time worrying frantically about what all I have to do. Sometimes you have to take a deep breath and realize it’s okay to leave some things unchecked from the list. Life is short. You will never have another today and tomorrow is not guaranteed. So often, it takes a major moment for us to realize this – a death, a loss, or a breaking point – but wouldn't it be great if we could live our lives this way? Counting our blessings and enjoying each day without worrying about tomorrow? In our busy world it’s so hard to slow down but the truth is, our days are numbered and each day is a blessing. To-do list or not.

These are a few of my favorite sayings that help me remember to stop and take in the moment. Northpoint church is also doing a great series on this right now called breathing room and last weeks message really hit home for me. Watch it here
