Christmas is over and the new year is upon us and like
clockwork I have an itch to hit the refresh button. Hitting refresh on eating
and exercise habits is pretty typical this time of year but for me, it’s more
than that. It’s like “spring cleaning” on speed. I don’t know if it’s the
Christmas tree needles everywhere or the gifts that need to find a
space in our home, but something in me has a burning desire to reorganize, clear out clutter, and get a fresh start for 2015. Here are
a few tips for how you can help hit the refresh button in your home:
First, pack up the Christmas decor: My mom has always started packing away the
Christmas decorations pretty much right after the last present was opened Christmas
morning. As a kid, I always felt this was way too early but now that I am an
adult, I am my mother in so many ways and this is definitely one of them. I
love Christmas but once it’s over it’s over and I’m ready to embrace the near
year with a clean and tidy home! Be sure to pack up the Christmas décor in a
neat and organized way so that it will be easy to tackle again next year.
Get rid of the unnecessary: Clothes in your closet you
haven’t worn all year? Too many candles, knick-knacks, or accessories lying
around? Get rid of them! Clearing out unnecessary clutter gives
you space to store the gifts you got at Christmas and a fresh clean home to
embrace a healthier, tidier, new you in the new year.
Try something new: We all make resolutions to be our best
selves in the new year – to exercise, travel more, drink less and so on. The
key to keeping any of these resolutions is to kick your old habits so that you
actually stand a chance of starting a new healthier pattern. The same is true
for your space. We tend to get stuck in a rut of “where things go” in our home.
Try something new – rearrange your furniture, re-accessorize a bookshelf, or
change out your artwork. You’ll be surprised at how a little change
can be totally refreshing.
Wishing you a lovely new year and a healthy, happy 2015!
