I have always wanted to visit San Francisco so when we moved to Southern California last summer we knew we had to make it happen while we were so close! So a few weeks ago, for my 30th birthday we booked a fancy hotel and headed out for a weekend getaway in San Fran.
We flew in early on Friday morning and were so excited to be greeted with warm temps and sunshine! We checked in at the Omni hotel in the financial district and head out to explore the Ferry Building Marketplace and Embarcadero. Max’s trip was complete within the first hour as he saw the manual flip chart sign update - he’s a simple man, one of the many things that I love about him. After checking out a few shops and restaurants we decided to make our way down to explore pier 39, where we saw the iconic seals, and fisherman’s wharf.
From there we caught an uber to grab lunch at a local spot called Blue Barn which was recommended by a trusted pal and it did not disappoint! Their salads were one of the best meals we had the whole trip! After lunch, we ubered back to Chrissy field, which had great waterfront views of the golden gate bridge, and walked from there to the base of the bridge, making a quick stop in the cute gift shop.
We really wanted to rent bikes and ride across the bridge or at least uber over to Sausilito but after nearly 10 miles of walking (pregnant mind you…) we decided we better not overdo it so we stopped for ice cream before heading back to the hotel. We went to StarBelly in Mission for dinner, which was a great local trendy spot.
Day two, after a luxurious night’s sleep at the hotel, Max and I took an
eye opening and slightly terrifying walk through the tenderloin to check out
the highly recommended Brenda’s Soul Food for brunch where we found ourselves
in a line wrapped around the building. Apparently Brenda knows what’s up.
Despite the delicious menu we decided not to wait it out and headed to Tartine
Bakery, a charming local bakery with amazing food! We shared the
pain au jambon, banana cream tart and the morning bun, which were all so delicious.
(Tartine is a must try if you visit San Fran!)
With full bellies, we headed to the nearby Dolores Park which was by far our
favorite spot in San Fran – the people watching and views are
unbelievable!
From there we
made our way to the painted ladies, which was quite the trek but a great way to
see the city! After a scenic stop in Alamo square park, we hoped in an Uber to
make our way to Haight and Ashbury which was a unique experience – colorful
wall murals, naked pedestrians and all.
We tried to get lunch at Monk’s Kettle but so did everyone else in San
Fran so we ended up at a great little Mexican place before exploring the
eclectic Castro district. After a quick stop in the hotel, we ended our day
with a delicious birthday dinner at the trendy and charming Marlowe restaurant
– great atmosphere and food!
Our last day was true San Fran weather with gusty winds and chilly temps. We started our day at blue bottle coffee (get the
waffle!) and had every intention of riding the cable car until when we got
there and saw that every other tourist in the city had the same idea. We
decided to Uber to Lombard street instead where we walked down the “crookedest
street in the world” which was quite scenic. From there, we walked to Ghirardelli square where we shared a ridiculous ice cream Sunday before heading to the airport.
It was a quick trip but we saw and did so much! We had the best weekend exploring and making memories - my bump made it's debut and I felt baby T for the first time which was the best birthday gift! It was a wonderful way to ring in 30! Thanks for being good to us San Fran!
A few of our favorites - Dolores Park, Tartine Bakery, Mission District,
Blue Barn Restaurant.
Places to see / things to do next time – Lucca
Deli, Brenda’s Soul Food, visit Sausilito, bike the golden gate bridge, try Bi
Rite Creamery, explore Nob Hill, ride a cable car.
